Cemetery Island, or Isola Di San Michele, is exactly what it sounds like: an island off the coast of Venice that is 100% covered by a cemetery.

There are a few well known people buried here including the composer Igor Stravinsky.

You’re not supposed to take pictures on the island, and there are very scary warning signs around warning that the police will be called…

    The thing is, in Italy the rationale for such restrictions is generally not about “respect” and more often due to a misguided idea that if they don’t let you take a picture you’ll buy one on the way out…

    Which I won’t. So nervously and as discreetly as possible, I snuck a few.

    The other side of that door leads directly into the ocean.
