The Law Of Attraction For Dummies

Chances are pretty good you have heard about the law of attraction by now. Perhaps you have seen The Secret, and if not, I highly suggest you do. If you haven’t read about it yourself, you may have heard a friend talking about it, or at the very least some vague recollection of a conversation you have with someone where the topic came up. But what is the law of attraction exactly?

The law of attraction states that like attracts like. That is, what you put out into the universe/God is what you get back. If you are happy, than you will find the universe providing you with more reasons to be happy, if you are grateful, you will receive ever greater gifts from God. But if you put out negativity, you will attract negativity towards you just as easily. In essence, your thoughts create your reality, what you think determines what you experience. One does not need to look far for examples of this in action, for instance, have you ever noticed that very negative people tend to attract other negative people to them?

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.

Proverbs 23:7

Though the law of attraction has a primarily spiritual basis, and is not a law in the scientific sense, in nonetheless has some degree of science behind it. That basis is that every life form is made up of energy, therefore your thoughts are energy, and energy has creative power. Whether you accept that explanation or not, there is more to the law of attraction than that.

The law of attraction is not a law you can break. No matter what it is always in action, the only choice you have to make is to be conscious and control it, or not. Many people discount the law of attraction because there is no proof, or because it seems to easy. “You mean all I have to do is think it, and I can have it? Yeah right! I keep thinking about winning the lottery and it hasn’t happened.”

Well, the law of attraction is both as simple as that, and much more complicated. Yes, the core of the law of attraction is that if you think it, it will be. But thinking it not what causes you to manifest your desires, it is the belief in the truth of the thought that set you up to achieve. This is why the law of attraction cannot help you win the lottery. You will never ever truly believe in your heart that you will win. You might hope, but you won’t believe, and even if you could have total belief, the lottery is not something you have any control over. You see the law of attraction acts as a sort of catalyst. Thinking in itself does not create your reality, but it does set the stage for the right events to unfold. Let me revisit the quote I posted previously:

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way.”

William Hutchinson Murray (1913-1996), from his 1951 book entitled “The Scottish Himalayan Expedition”.

If you hold in your heart and remain committed to a negative pessimistic belief about money for instance, you will probably never have money. Your thoughts will prevent you from taking the right actions to produce money in your life. You may act miserly and be afraid to spend or invest. You might cling to a low paying job out of a fear that you won’t get another one. You may become oblivious to obvious opportunities simply because you don’t believe they exist.

But, when you can release your fear, and learn to hold a believe in your heart that you have everything you will ever need and more will always come, it has a way of doing so. Suddenly you aren’t so afraid to invest some money, because if you lose it, you can always make more, and the gains could be substantial if it goes well. You no longer fear losing your job and are more open to chances. You might start your own business and in doing so start a whole new cycle of prosperity.

The same principle hold true for love. So many people experience and endless cycle of bad relationships, and what’s more they tend to experience identical problems in each one. Worse, they come to expect the same problems, and in doing so sub-consciously perform actions that lead to them. For instance if someone is cheated on they may always carry with them the memory of that hurt that the fear of experiencing the same betrayal again. Consequently they may not ever fully trust future partners, and eventually this mistrust will be detected. The very existence of that mistrust can cause a relationship to break down.

Many popular books of the law of attraction make it seems as though it is some kind of magic. It’s more marketable that way, but the reality is the law of attraction isn’t all that esoteric at all. It is a basic principle of the world with more than enough evidence to back it up.

Those who believe they can, can. Those who believe they can’t, can’t.
