I was initially a little hesitant about taking the trip as it was a long bus ride from our hotel, and I wasn’t sure how I felt about an organized tour, being the independent guy I am. Luckily the price was almost free so it was we ended up going. I am sure glad that we did, seeing this fascinating place was most definitely worth it.

The level of sophistication and scientific advancement of the Mayan’s was nothing short of amazing, and we had the pleasure of learning about it from a guide who was clearly very passionate about the subject. Of course there was also that whole human sacrifice thing…

What the Spanish did to this civilization is one of the great crimes of history. They burned nearly all of their books, and obliterated most of their history all with the goal of converting them to Christianity. But, as our guide pointed out, telling people human sacrifice is wrong while at the same time trying to get them to follow a god who sacrificed his only begotten son… Well, it might not work very well.

It is a real challenge to get good photos of this place, and that’s a shame. It is crawling with tourists, and it closes at 5pm. So forget about waiting for the good light.
